Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
