Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal toward Fans
The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward attendees during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.
“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the wrong finger,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, possesses an estimated wealth of $16 billion, so the fine manageable for the wealthy proprietor.

This event follows a contentious offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
