A recent study indicates that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying such medications need to be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like something activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
